From Art Basel Miami to Miami Ironside
Art Basel Miami Beach (ABMB) is THE annual art show held in Miami since 2002. Art Basel holds three major fairs each year (Hong Kong, Basel + Miami Beach) focusing on modern and contemporary art. This year ABMB will have over 268 galleries and 4,000 artists from around the world on their stage with the art world’s most renowned curators, collectors and museums. Art Week in December with Art Basel as the focal point has become a major draw for the City with satellite art fairs, parties and events around town.
The Art Basel Fair started in Switzerland in 1970 and with the sister fair now in Miami, it has become a catalyst for a local art ecosystem full of diversity with something for everyone throughout the four-day event. While located at the Miami Beach Convention Center you will find a myriad of satellite off-beat and off-center art fairs all around town.
Thursday through Sunday, December 7 - 10, 2017
The Miami Beach Convention Center (MBCC) houses the exhibitors as well as several large-scale works, with films and performances taking place nearby at Collins and SoundScape Parks. MBCC has 500,000-square-feet of exhibit space which has newly poured concrete floors that have been raised due to the potential rise of sea-level. The renovation project has already cost over $635 million dollars and once the ABMB fair closes, so will the MBCC to continue the work into the new year. This 2017 renovation update has been a long time in coming – since the original 1950’s designs with only a few previous touch ups in the 1980's.
Throughout the entire first 10 days of December, Miami Art Week, with Art Basel Miami Beach as the highlight and go-to for all that contemporary art represents, Miami Ironside has become a quiet respite for the fair fatigued aficionados before, after and even instead of trudging around. Just 10 minutes from the MBCC, Miami Ironside offers an enchanting refuge for meeting up with friends at the café, the fitness center, the bocce court, the wood burning pizza oven restaurant or the butterfly gardens. With three art galleries in the central piazza and more – know you can get away, yet be right around the corner. www.MiamiIronSide.com
