Celebrated designer Stephanie Odegard's collection marry the interests of the upscale designer carpet market with the age-old tradition of hand knotted carpet weaving. Through Odegard’s design and marketing, privately owned production facilities in Nepal, India and other countries she has helped restore local communities both economically and socially.  Since 1987, Odegard’s pioneering designs and environmentally sustainable practices have introduced a new genre of hand knotted product to the luxury market – a product that invigorates and challenges the market while sustaining the artisans and local communities responsible for production. Counterculture/ How long have you been a tenant resident at Miami Ironside, and what is special to you about having your office/studio here?

The Stephanie Odegard Collection has been at Ironside for about four years and we are happy to be part of such a dynamic community.  We have taken notice of the vibrant energy here that has continued to grow year after year.  We love being a part of the neighborhood and it doesn’t hurt that Ironside boasts some of the best pizza around!

Counterculture/ Tell us more about your latest projects.

We were so excited and pleased to see designer Jorge Rosso’s project in the August 2014 issue of Architectural Digest. Jorge is a long time client and really showcases our beautiful rugs and furniture in this North Carolina home.

Counterculture/ What was the first thing you ever designed or made in your studio and how did you get your start in your field? 

The Belak was the first design that I introduced to the U.S. market in 1987.  The snow frog footprint motif was taken from an antique Mongolian rug I collected and had in my Kathmandu home.  By repeating just the footprint in two colors, with no border, my interpretation of a traditional design became completely modern.  After I commissioned Belak with a top local rug maker (who I still work with to this day) I moved to New York the following year and tried to convince carpet dealers that there was a market for my modern interpretations.  I was told “no” a lot and began selling my imports out of my tiny apartment on East 22nd Street.  The dealers in the United States just didn’t think there was a market for non-traditional patterned carpets, particularly with simple colors like mine.  As it turns out, the dealers were wrong, and today Odegard sells carpets, wall hangings, tapestries, decorative objects and furniture to designers and commercial clients from all over the world.

Counterculture/ What inspires you work? Your passion to design and create collections?

My passion is to use the skills of the best traditional artisans in Nepal and India to interpret my designs and ideas using their best expert skills.  This fuels my creativity as I see their interpretations come alive and enhance my ideas.  I’m inspired by art, nature, architecture and ancient cultures during periods when artisanal work flourished.

Counterculture/ How have your travel experiences influenced and inspired your collections?

Travel inspires me enormously.  I am most inspired and creative when I am out of my own environment and visit museums, new projects and restorations.  Nature also fuels my creative side as it frees me from boundaries more apparent and prevalent in the city.

Counterculture/ How has the field of Design grown since you started and what do you think has fueled its market growth over the last century?

The field of design grows as creative people enter the field and ignite new design ideas.  My own designs have revolutionized the new rug industry as the market I created for modern designer’s in hand knotted rugs has grown from my first introductions.  The same has happened with the particular types of furniture, lighting and accessory lines I introduced.

Counterculture/ What projects or new design collections are on the horizon for the future?

We introduced our new Shio and Sari Lights carpet collections this summer.

The Shio Collection of rugs are hand-dyed and hand-knotted entirely by the hands of adult labor using 100% Himalayan vegetal and Swiss chrome dyed wool.  These pieces demonstrate graphic artistry and daring contrasts, making this collection Stephanie’s homage to an ancient eastern ethnic group this collection was inspired by.

The Sari Lights collection of rugs are hand-knotted from Indian raw silk, the mottled effect of each rug reproduced utilizes a proprietary technique which makes each piece a stunning piece of art.
