Changing Our Lives By Changing Our Minds: How We Create Our Own Reality

We spend our lives being seduced by the outside world, believing utterly that happiness and suffering come from “out there.” The experiential implications of this are attachment and neediness, blame, anger, guilt, anxiety, and the rest.

The Buddha’s view is that, even though the outside world plays a huge role - of course it does! - we create our own reality. By becoming deeply familiar with the workings of our own mind, and learning to understand the intricacies of the law of karma - for the Buddha, a natural law - we can gradually loosen the grip of ego-grasping and open up our marvelous potential for clarity, contentment, love, and the other qualities innate within us.

Ven Robina is well known for her no-nonsense teaching style that embodies both great compassion and razor-sharp wisdom. Her teachings are challenging, inspiring and empowering. Featured in the acclaimed film ‘Chasing Buddha’, about her work in prisons, she now travels and teaches full time at the Buddhist centres of Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s FPMT.

EXHIBITION
展览 名称 | THE MODERN UTOPIA

An increasingly common goal for the world's most accomplished contemporary artists is a revisitation of old or antiquated techniques and traditions of their home country. When the artist capably treads the boundary between old and new (while firmly placing their work within the larger context of "novelty" or "originality"), it is when creativity may reach its full potential. This is true for Chinese artist Lu Chengxiang.

MY SILK ROAD TO YOU By Almagul Menlibayeva

January 19-Feburary 20, 2016

Opening Reception

Janurary 19, 6-9 pm

ART LEXING is pleased to present My Silk Road to You, Kazakh artist Almagul Menlibayeva’s first solo exhibition at the gallery January 14, 2016. Menlibayeva films mythological narratives placed and staged in the vast landscape of her native Kazakhstan ravaged by 60 years of Soviet occupation. She leads her audience to the brutally changed region of the Aral Sea where its indigenous people live in the Aralkum, the desert of a once thriving region now entirely devoid of water due to radical Soviet irrigation politics.

The region of Transoxiana (Greek for ‘across the Oxus’) in southwestern Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, once the eastern part of the Hellenistic regime under Alexander the Great and the former homeland of the nomadic tribes of Persia and Turan at the banks of the Oxus River, remained an important trade region along the Northern Silk Road with flourishing civilizations and fertile plains for many centuries. Afflicted by former Soviet policies and abandoned by commercial and cultural interests, today, Transoxiana lies bare and stripped in a surreal state of existence with discarded fishing fleets on dusty terrain, cleaved by metal scavengers while its inhabitants look on as the sea keeps receding into a far and unreachable distance of a seemingly better world.

In From My Silk Road to you, Menlibayeva, a pictorial sorceress herself, breeds an eccentric storyline and fantastical imagery extracted deeply from her own atavistic repertoire, and leading visionally through an existing, yet unimaginable landscape in a distant and hypnagogic world.

Almagul Menlibayeva was born in Almaty, Kazakhstan, lives and works in Kazakhstan and Berlin and holds an MFA from the Art & Theatre University of Almaty. She has gained international recognition exhibiting at the 15th Sydney Biennial; 51st, 52nd and 53rd Venice Biennale; Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst, M HKA, Antwerp, Belgium; Queens Museum, NY; Herbert F. Johnson Museum, Ithaca, NY; Stenersen Museum, Oslo, Norway; University of California, San Diego, CA; Museo Universitario del Chopo, Mexico City; Queensland Art Gallery, Bisbane, Australia; and more recently at the Chicago Cultural Center, Chicago, IL. Menlibayeva's videos have been shown at the Santiago International Film Festival, Chile; International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, Germany; International Film Festival Rotterdam, The Netherlands; Les Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin/Madrid; Centre Pompidou, Paris, France; and Palais de Tokyo, Paris, France. Currently, Menlibayeva, in collaboration with Bahar Behbahani, is exhibiting a two-channel video installation titled Ride the Caspian at the Sharjah Biennial: Plot for a Biennial, curated by Suzanne Cotter, Rasha Salti and Haig Aivazian. In 2010, Menlibayeva was the recipient of a grant from the Open Society Institute Budapest, Art and Culture Network Program. In 2011, Menlibayeva will show in Videonale 13 at Kunstmuseum Bonn, Germany (April 14 – May 28, 2011).

MY SILK ROAD TO YOU: A VIDEO INSTALLATION BY ALMAGUL MENLIBEYEVA
November 18, 2015 - January 15, 2016
Art Lexing Gallery

ART LEXING is pleased to present My Silk Road to You, Kazakh artist Almagul Menlibayeva’s first solo exhibition at the gallery from November 18th 2015 through January 20, 2016.

In her video “Transoxiana Dreams”, screened at MoMA PS1 as part of EXPO IN 2013, and accompanying photographs, Menlibayeva tells the tale of a young fisherman’s daughter who observes the dramatic changes to the landscape of the Aral region and its population through a child’s eyes in a dreamlike mélange of documentary and fantasy. Menlibayeva visually walks the viewer through a vacant landscape and a symbolic dream whereby the girl’s father searches for the remaining sea and new fishing grounds while encountering strange and seductive four-legged female creatures (Centaurs) on his way through the hostile desert. Drawing on the image of the Greek mythological figure of the Centaur, Menlibayeva creates alluring hybrid beings, both sexually charged and bizarre alike. According to the legend, when the ancient Greeks first encountered the nomads of the Transoxianian Steppes on their horses, they initially believed them to be mythological quadruped, part person part animal, fearing their savage and magical powers.

QUENTIN SHIH: DREAMING IN CUBAN

ART LEXÏNG presents the 2nd solo exhibition by New York-based artist Quentin Shih (Xiaofan Shi) entitled Dreaming In Cuban. The exhibition title is lifted from a 1993 novel by author Cristina García, recounting the experiences of three generations of restless, clairvoyant del Pino women navigating their passionate spirits in a rapidly changing physical and political landscape. Just as García allows the simmering passions of Cuba and its characters to surface, Shih’s photographic series (titled La Habana In Waiting) explores the unwritten tensions and melancholy residing in Cuban citizens who quietly sit for an artist's lens.

ART LEXÏNG Presents a Solo Exhibition by Pierre-Elie de Pibrac: In Situ

Opening Reception
Saturday, March 14, 6:30-10 pm
Ballet Performance by Colette Trujillo and Violinist Ben Carson, 6:45 pm
Download Invitation

ART LEXÏNG is pleased to present a solo exhibition, In Situ, by photographer Pierre-Elie de Pibrac, in collaboration with Colette Trujillo and Nick Alain, March 14-May 8, 2015. The exhibition will open with a special reception on Saturday, March 14 from 6:30 to 10pm, and will feature a performance by Trujillo (a ballet dancer with the New World School of the Arts' Dance Program) and a unique lighting and mirror installation by Nick Alain (which will aim to recreate the majestic, vivid atmosphere of the Garnier Opera house).

In Situ is a series staged by de Pibrac, taking viewers on a journey through the world of classical ballet, which traces its origins to the imperial court of Louis XIV. Ballet as an expression of movement became an artistic apex: the highest, most elite form of Romantic dance that endures to this day.

In situ (in Latin, literally means "On set") evokes the immersion of photography at the ballet center of Paris Opera during 2013-2014 season. De Pibrac was granted unprecedented access to the on and offstage lives of its dancers. The series is broken into three phases. In Situ I: Confidences, capture private moments outside the sphere of live performance, In Situ II harnessed the energies of dancers in motion, and the final phase, In Situ III: Analogy, focused on the architecture of the Garnier Opera as a living, breathing being on its own; its own history and dramas coexisting with dancers throughout the centuries. The dancer's existence is a transient one, where no one stays with a single company, a single director, or a single partner, indefinitely. De Pibrac's achievement is not only resident in his technical precision and quiet observance with his camera, but his persistence in constructing an intimate body of work capped with a shot of the opera's nine most elite dancers on the rooftop (the photograph, Analogia No. 14, was an endeavor of its own that took three months to complete).

OPENING RECEPTION: THE DAZZLING WORLD OF YE HONGXING

ART LEXÏNG Gallery inaugurates their gallery at Ironside with a presentation of works by celebrated Chinese artist Ye Hongxing, on view January 25-March 10, 2015.

Following the overwhelming response to her collaborations with luxury shoe designer, Christian Louboutin and her residency program at the prestigious Lux Art Institute in Encinitas, California this past fall, Beijing-based artist Ye Hongxing’s profile and reputation continues to soar as one of China’s most relevant and successful contemporary artists.

Hongxing’s new artworks are jewel-strewn images comprised of stickers, diamante, glassbeads and stones. Vivid scenes are made from layers of tiny colourful embellishments. From a distance, the works appear as hyper real compositions of nature, complete with animals and creatures in a colourful wonderland. On closer inspection, the large scenes are assembled from thousands of stickers. Massproduced materials collected from retail and haberdashery outfits depict clashing images of nature, buddhas, skulls, shoes and helicopters. Hongxing’s wild clash of east versus west motifs reveals a visual reading of a modern China. Caught in the frenzy the country’s economic and technological progress, her pieces aim to lend a narrative on the dizzying impact on itspeople, highlighting the fusion of modern technology and secularism with the more traditional and spiritual aspects of Chinese culture.

Sara Raza, Curator and Asian art historian states that Hongxing’s work presents “a critique into the symptoms of globalisation, where industrial, societal and economic advancements and changes in attitude are moving at such a rapid pace that they are in fact eclipsing culture.”
