2014 Design Escape Launch Highlights

Miami Ironside premiered Design Escape last week during Art and Design Week Miami. The inaugural event brought together the global design industry for a week-long activation inspiring art and design in the Upper Eastside.

Design Escape commenced with a distinctive oasis by world-renowned architect and industrial artist Ron Arad with a nod to his collaborative editions for Italian luxury brands FIAT and Moroso. The design retreat featured a Fiat 500 Ron Arad design, the original edition was made in Italy and unveiled at Paris Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2015. Arad’s contemporary, sinuous lounge-seating systems for Italian luxury brand Moroso were also on display including Victoria & Albert (2000), Ripple Chair (2005) and Misfits (2007). Standseven’s first U.S. pop-up shop featured high-end design products, including a limited-edition stool by designer David Adjaye, as well as the Mindball Interactive Gaming Experience, providing guests the opportunity to challenge attention skills through electrical activity in the brain. The Mindball Gaming Experience was also a big hit over the weekend with the neighboring Cushman School families. Miami Ironside also launched a beneficiary event partnership with the non-profit Chapman Partnership raising donations through the Mindball plays through out the week. The fundraiser will continue through the end of the month through ongoing campus events and activations. Adorning the walls of the lounge space were works by celebrated American artist Bill Dunlap, on view through Sunday, December 14.

The week also saw the opening of Swiss manufacturer LAUFEN with their US headquarters at Ironside with a nod to Swiss art and design with a featured exhibition by Tom Strala as well as a SaphirKeramik installation by Konstanin Gricic and Toan Ngyuyen.

On top of the fun, we also launched an online concept shop in partnership with SPOOTNIK, a web planet where the world's finest prescriptors, like prestigious magazines, art institutions and designers gather to curate the most amazing stores.

Thank you to all of our partners, visitors, special guests, MIS Showrooms, staff and Studio Milano for making this launch a big success and a solid platform to build on for the coming years.

On Tuesday, December 2, Miami Ironside and co-host Fiat USA held the "Post-Punk" innovation cocktail featuring celebrated architect and industrial artist Ron Arad. In what was an impromptu moment—Arad-style, of course—the designer, together with Miami Ironside founder Ofer Mizrahi and Ron Arad Architectsdirector Asa Bruno, surprised guests by unveiling conceptual renderings of a commercial and residential architectural building, scheduled for occupancy in 2018 at Miami Ironside. In addition to the unveiling, Arad presented the making of the Fiat 500 Ron Arad Edition, where violinist Monty Bloom and DJ Inaia kept the vibes festive with downtempo beats while guests sipped on Robert De Niro’s VDKA 6100Vodka signature Cucumber Mint Collins cocktails and wine by Kettmeir, tantalized by specialty hors d'oeuvres from the chefs at Toscana Divino.

On Wednesday, December 3, Miami Ironside and MOCA North Miami together with LAUFEN North America presented the Campus Collective event - a night of Brazillian music and fun browsing Miami Ironside's showrooms and studios. The evening opened up with a Design Talk: Materialized Intelligence moderated by Belgrade Design Week Founder and Curator, Jovan Jelovac, in conversation with LAUFEN's Director of Marketing and Products, Marc Viardot, and emerging Swiss designer Tom Strala, on the material approach to design.

The highlight of the week was the Design Talk held on Thursday, December 4 with Alastair Gordon, Wall Street Journal contributing editor of Design and Architecture, where he lead a thoughtful discourse on designing the future with Ron Arad, Creative Director Patrizia Moroso and architect and designer Piero Lissoni. A highlight of the discussion was the Watergate Chair designed by Ron Arad and produced by Moroso for The Watergate Hotel. The Talk was also cited as one the top 5 design highlights during Art Week Miami by ARTPHAIRE Magazine.
